Does anyone understand the point of “hiking boots” and can you explain it to me?

I don't know how they're made, but with off-road tires it's as simple as raising the coefficient of friction, so that you are less likely to slip on a slippery surface, but making motion much less efficient on less adversarial terrain. In both cases, they're not for the street.
ah you get the physics of it? this is what I don’t get - why is a thicker immobile sole better?

I don't have one handy to examine so I'm just guessing that's the intended effect. I remember the undersides being much grippier than ordinary shoes.

Oh, well the thicker sole is more resistant to being worn away, so that's a separate thing for durability.
