take the perspective of someone who does nothing and has nothing going on - your doing things is an attack on their self-esteem
so telling you you’re doing it wrong is one way to regain self-esteem I think (still trying to figure out humans)
this is not even intended to be mean - could be people who used to do things but are now too old etc.
I think there’s probably an attempt at bonding through shared misery, and a genuine desire to be helpful by sharing experience (but too late)... doesn’t help, though
