This happens once a week: me: <learns a thing by doing it> me, on twitter: "I'm doing XYZ" rando: words that boil down to "oh, you just wasted $200 and are going to have to deal with a mess because you're dumb and did the wrong thing" why do people do this?

wife's view of it is similar, but distinct: everyone wants to be part of a tribe, so joining a conversation on X is a way of saying "hey! I like that you do X, and I do some X too, and we should be friends!" This is very charitable and sweet...and might be true DESPITE that :P

so telling you you’re doing it wrong is one way to regain self-esteem I think (still trying to figure out humans)

this is not even intended to be mean - could be people who used to do things but are now too old etc.
