I know what's wrong with my elderly car. Why would I swap it for another old car with unknown problems?

Not sure who to believe. Social physics has produced real, tangible results. Google/Facebook/White Hall use this daily. "Correcting" for cognitive biases has been shown to lead to objective improvements in defined policy objectives.

I also see the other side. Let's forget ethics for a moment. Does behavioral economics "work?" Yes. Definitively. If the idea is to cast this aside because of ethics or perhaps more importantly, catastrophic tail risks of top-down policy, does this make the results untrue? No.

Also sunk costs bias protects against regression to the mean. (ie prevents you from thrashing a previous adaptation only to readapt to a short-termed trend.)
