Almost as jarring as when a character notes something in the fictional world is “like a bad novel” or “like a bad TV show”

Swearing is often preserved when other speech faculties are destroyed by aphasia, e.g. following a stroke. Combine that with Tourette syndrome and it's clear that swearing is an almost separate system of communication.
