Have to say it's irritating when you're reading academic writing where the author quotes something in another language (which usually seems to be French) without providing any translation. Makes it less accessible to many people who would otherwise be prepared to understand it.
I see a lot of people doing this 80-100 years ago and I think it’s really easy to forget to translate
you forget that things that are clear to you need translation and often your audience doesn’t need it so it feels silly
I always assumed ppl like bragging abt knowing french they always seem to provide brief translation of latin but will just quote french phrases and move on its messed up
also french is basically impoverished english so it’s extra silly
