Realistically it’s probably a combination of the bureaucratic creep into housing and jobs and the proliferation of credit cards over cash

Good luck getting a job with no permanent address, good luck renting a room with no job, good luck getting a motel room without a credit card, etc

Paradoxically, I think increasing societal wealth makes the drifter class worse off because there are greater potential risks to letting someone rent your spare room, as well as less need to make all your property bring in income.
