DM Berger added,
@EikoFried yeah this is my starting point, hence “depression” is scare quotes when I remember
(or “derpression” which I think is funnier)
lol. For real though, even just switching adding some adjectives and/or going with better labels goes a long way. E.g. dysthymia, cyclothymia, recurrent / chronic / episodic depression. Or just describing the actual problem itself, e.g. anhedonia vs. lethargy vs. hopelessness etc
bad vocabulary is like 60% of my problem I think - especially the “excruciating mental state” category
Been there. When I did therapy a long time ago, spent a lot of time introspecting and coming up with my own "psycho-ontology" to richly describe my inner states. Now when I meet other "depressed" people I feel one issue is the monolithic way in which they model their problems.
Like I've realized the average person (i.e. folk psychology) doesn't really distinguish positive emotion from actual will/drive/motivation. This is catastrophic for attempting to understand depressive conditions, because the two are very different systems, physically and mentally
The distinction between meaning/value vs. joy/pleasure/happiness. That's maybe more obvious and present in folk-psychology and popular culture, but typically overlooked in depressions. Some depression is due to lack of positive emotion, and some is due to loss of meaning/value.
There are some more technical / esoteric ones. E.g. anticipatory anhedonia vs. anhedonia proper. I.e. "Yes, I am certain will enjoy X if I do it, but thinking about it, I feel no will to do it, nor joy in imagining doing it". I find this subtle but hugely important.
Was something I found when looking into negative symptoms of schizophrenia, and which I definitely struggle with. I think it's related to issues with lack of meaning ("Yes, I will enjoy it, but so what? It's just joy.") or possibly some other obscure motivational thing.
