in my mind opiates get less dangerous when you’re less likely to mix them with alcohol

this is true, i recall seeing some study about how an overwhelming majority of "opioid overdoses" involved benzos or ethanol (which is an argument against prohibition, people potentiating their opioids with EtOH or benzos is pretty flagrantly downstream of scarcity of opioids)
