From where i'm standing It seems to be a near-core facet of our mental facilities. People going thru dementia / have extreme memory problems will often lie (to themselves?) about why they did something. That people don't seem to know they are doing it (ala "the elephant in the brain"?) is really weird to me. I also think there is something related in Pathological Lying and how that seems to be a relatively common occurrence with OCD and other anxiety disorders/depression.
