I’ve not much to say about atoning, but a lot to say about the joys of gathering with one’s community. Yom Kippur with other humans was ace.

Neil Diamond ("Yussel Rabinovitch") sings Kol Nidre in the 1980 remake of The Jazz Singer (you can watch the 1927 original, starring Al Jolson, on YouTube). Sir Laurence Olivier plays Yussel's disapproving father.

It's still really hard to obtain an abortion in Mexico, but at least it's not illegal anymore.

“If you’re going to take your mask off while waiting for takeaway I’m going to need to see your vax passport. And a photo ID.” —my first post vax encounter with a pissy waiter. Nature really is healing.

Emily Hauser. Editor's joy since 2013 (back in the Daily Beast days). Do read her fierce take on the Texas abortion law.

This thread is remarkable - in part because typically black and brown journalists are the ones forced to speak up here. Can't imagine statistics at any of the major journalistic institutions would look much better...

Brilliant. The power of the message matches the vitriol of the haters, so clearly she made her point.

Reminds me of a high school debate I once heard. "Be it resolved that war is a force for good." One debater argued that war was necessary to prune the population. A member of the opposing team asked: "Madam. Would YOU like to be PRUNED?"

I am very struck by how true and important this essay by feels. Black women are given so much credit when they achieve superhuman feats—e.g., Stacey Abrams, Serena Williams, Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka—and so little room to be just human. And tired.

Very odd day so far. Ur WASP friend with Canadian roots going back to the 1600s sent me a picture of the creamy hummus he made using Ottolenghi’s recipe, and a “French from France” friend who probably teethed on brioche announced that she plans to vote for Bloc Québécois.
