Family & I have been arguing over whether it's worth it to continue paying more for a traditional (not digital) landline for use in emergencies like this. After reading this article, don't think we'll be arguing anymore, at least not for the next year or two.

We had a similar problem with cell after hurricane Dorian. The really shocking discovery about the lack of resilience in our systems is that FIber op needs power too. And regardless if you have copper, if it’s fiber on the street the landline phones won’t work either!!!!

I think these numbers are way understated. Based on calls I had today, I'm guessing that even the cell sites still working are working on inadequate battery or generator power trucked in from elsewhere.
