Want to know how deep the racism in Austin 2018 vs. Memphis in 1968 goes? In both cities, the single largest concentration of African-American workers is in the sanitation department. Let that sink in, please, for a second.

While no organizations track the number of Black people operating full-service supermarkets, sources familiar with the situation and some of the remaining grocers suggest that fewer than 10 Black-owned supermarkets remain across the entire country.

Before you contend that massive densification along “corridors” is some sort of consensus position, let me remind you that those of us along East Riverside had fears & suggestions that were ignored. We have not forgotten the massive gentrification and displacement that followed.

The just passed Congressional budget increases funding for the Public Housing Capital Fund by $800 million dollars. The operating fund was also increased. Combined with local funding, there is no justification for privatizing Rosewood Courts.

Especially during hardship, we in Austin need to come together and support each other. Please consider donating to the Draylen Mason Memorial Fund to help celebrate his incredible young life and help his family rebuild:

Happy snow day, I am using an astonishingly expensive hair dryer to remove all moisture from a chicken to maximize skin crispiness when I roast it.

Massive new development "Project Catalyst" planned for East Riverside. How quickly people forget the thousands of people that were displaced so it could be built. Several hundred of them were outright evicted.

Austin does not believe in truly helping and empowering poor people. It believes in throwing lots of money at non-profits. Those are not the same thing.

There will be a Section 106 process for Chalmers Courts, as at Rosewood. Austin's public housing will not go down without a spirited fight.

The question of whether Rosewood Courts gets redeveloped (or how) is not a question for the city's Historic Landmark Commission. There is one standard: it applies equally at the Muny Golf Course, Rosewood Courts, or anywhere.

Let's be clear about something concerning Rosewood Courts: "The [current] residents support this" isn't the standard we use for historic preservation. We have rules for this sort of stuff for a reason. It is also beside the point.

They have indeed. In my community of Montopolis (served by Austin Habitat) we have made our preference for Passivhaus known. Our local chapter should listen and learn. And then partner with the community.
