I doubt it's the books. We'd find other reasons to kill ourselves if the books didn't exist.
On one hand, Homo sapiens has created intelligent AI and has broken the space barrier and on the other hand, they are killing one another because of what a handful of men wrote down in books 2000 - 10,000 years ago. It boggles the mind.
