My unicorn paper is out! After 7 years of data synthesis, new conceptualization, and building numerical models, we now have the first estimate of thermokarst (abrupt thaw) carbon emissions. This hotspot process affects small areas but packs a big C punch.

Raining in the Alps even above 2000 m altitude... Just doesn't feel like winter in much of Europe.

Very warm episode in the Alps yesterday, with rain on snow events below 1900 m The consequences can be seen on the water level of river Lech at Lechaschau, in the north of Tirol

Cold front traversing the Alps of Tirol just now, with very clear effect on temperature at high elevation. Patscherkofel, near Innsbruck, registers a 10°C drop in six hours.

I decided that this year, every day, I would knit a row on a scarf to mark the corresponding daily temperature/weather of my town. It felt like a good way to engage with the changing climate and with the changing year. A way to notice and not look away. Here's January then.

This visualisation of *per capita* emissions is great. Someone in Qatar emits 750 times as much as someone in Somalia (who emits virtually nothing yet is probably already experiencing the effects of climate change)

On this day 200 years ago, humans first sighted the continent of Antarctica. Since then we took nearly all of its whales and heavily depleted its marine life, dissolved its ozone, warmed its ocean and melted its ice. From the point of view of this amazing place it was a bad day.
