Before this gets out of hand. "Distance doesn't matter" IS NOT what "it's airborne" or primarily aerosol-transmitted means or implies, and the headline is not reflecting correctly a modeling paper they are using says. Yup. Inverse square rule. Average particle density must decline *at least* ~1/distance^2 from a point source.

Yeah, though I do think it's a legitimate point about time duration and ventilation being the biggest effective factors by far. Distance is basically a small protection that gets overwhelmed with time and bad ventilation

True. Oth >~4-5', generally you expect ~well mixed conditions. Lots of caveats in any specific room, but I don't see that you can say anything else on av.? But, > dist does impose lower density. Av. dose/person may not depend on dist too much, but infections scale w # of people.

This
. You could even argue that the “distance” rule of thumb is just a proxy for density of people over time indoors. (You can only fit 3 people at a time in your store at 6’ apart? Ok, so each person spends say only 3 minutes rebreathing aerosols from 2 other people... - Show replies

So I think I'm saying that even in perfectly well mixed conditions, ultimately distance matters for spread of infections, which is what we care about at the end of the day.

Could have said 600 feet is no safer than 6 inches.

It only assumes that mixing is faster than other relevant time scales like settling, inactivation, etc. If the room air mixes in 10 minutes and settling takes 2 hours then only 1/12 of my exhalations will be near me and 11/12 will be uniform in the room. Is there a mistake here?
