    The last native speaker of Livonian died in 2013. The people live in 🇱🇻 and 🇪🇪. Despite heavy influence from (Indo-European) Latvian, Livonian itself belongs to the Finnic branch of the Uralic family, closely related to Estonian and Finnish.

    But true, the south coast dialects have better intelligibility with standard Swedish than for example southern Ostrobothnian. This is partly due to lack of secondary diphthongisation (an archaism) and partly to a less divergent vocabulary.

    The Old Norse system of quantity and syllable structure is best preserved in eastern Nyland (south coast). This should be the only place (including Dalarna, Norrbotten or remote Norwegian valleys that have short CVCV-words) where Old Norse short CVC monosyllables are preserved.

    Sometimes we mix poor intelligibility with archaic character. In the case of Närpes I claim this is the case. In terms of phonology the Pedersöre/Kronoby area 150 km north has more in common with Old Norse than Närpes or Icelandic has. The same is even more true for East Nyland.

    The modern Gotlandic dialect of Swedish is separate from the dialects in the far south descending from the Gutnish tongue. Gotlandic is not “Gutnish with Swedish influence” but is an acquired language: “Swedish with Gutnish influence” if you will.
