In light of the controversy over "cages," it's worth remembering the language we've long used to rationalize youth "detention." When I visited juvenile jail in Memphis, I was told over & over, "this is not a jail.” Kids were in "rooms," not cells.

When I visited, federal monitors had been in & out of the facility for months; there were reports about increasing assaults & kids exhibiting suicidal behavior. But remember: "not a jail."

In my brief chance to talk to some kids who'd been locked up there, all of whom were black, they described how cold their "rooms" were; how they hated being kept inside them for days as punishment.

But hey, when I visited, the restraint chair was gone and a ban on talking during meals was being lifted and there was a new Positive Behavior Management System that allowed kids to earn points for 'privileges.'

We have a real problem with language in this country. " land of the free" = greatest jailer in history. Gerrymandering- creating government districts to benefit your re election is some how not campaign activity.

I saw a headline from Breitbart mocking other news outlets for calling them cages and instead insisting they were just "chainlink partitions". What exactly do they think a chainlink cage is made from?

I did my college internship at a "youth development center" where the ppl that worked there were called "counselors" & the youth "students"

It's the highest security facility for youth in the state. Words don't change the treatment and isolation those kids face
