Taken from my bedroom window looking east at sunset so am assuming this this little sunburst effect is a communication from the gods? Please send interpretive guidance.
This thread is handy, in a horrifying way (we now need like some kind of visual aid to keep track of the separate ways our government is failing to treat migrant children as basically human)
Keep seeing this and it seems worth noting it conflates two separate travesties. First, HHS has lost track of 1,475 minors of some seven thousand who show up at the border *unaccompanied by family* and were placed with sponsors. https://nytimes.com/2018/04/26/us/politics/migrant-children-missing.html… ... https://twitter.com/lehimesa/status/999785830448226306…
Is that divisive? I guess.
Separating children from their parents and shunting them to military bases, even caring so little where they go you lose them by the hundreds is divisive, too.
If we are to unite around that? Then let the divide grow.
I find that I lack a solid vocabulary for talking about and acting against evil, which (I think?) requires a different kind of response than ordinary shitty behavior.
I’m an atheist and can’t be anything other than that, but the last couple of years have taught me that I’m missing a rhetoric of evil (as opposed to random careless bad things).
definitely lost patience with "but things have always been bad" as (1) a rejoinder to people who damn well know it already, (2) a gambit that erases meaningful new dimensions of badness & (3) a fake-wise performance to justify never having done anything then or doing anything now
For me it’s more like a rising feeling of panic, every time. My kids’ preschool has an app where I can see pics of them during the day, so I look at it, feel soothed, and then feel guilty. I don’t actually know what to do with these feelings.
I am reading these first-hand accounts of mothers who had their children taken from them, with no word of where they were going or how to contact them, and I'm thinking about someone doing that to me and my kids and I feel a rage so powerful I think I'm gonna pass out.
Re research: I’d recommend that ppl get in contact w/their state refugee liaison & specifically the staff assigned to unaccompanied minors; they can provide helpful details. Also look up state & local foster care licensing violations of subcontractors (available to the public).
Rosa Parks was not protesting the bus. Gandhi was not protesting the food. The colonists were not protesting tea. Players are not protesting the flag or the anthem. They are protesting injustice.
website, there’s a dire need for foster families for these kids - they have partner orgs around the country to help families get certified and place refugee/migrant kids: https://lirs.org/become-a-foster-parent…
REPORT: These policy changes & those likely to come dramatically undermine the US system of protection for immigrant & refugee children and fundamentally alter the identity of the US as a global leader in the protection of the most vulnerable #NotALoopholehttps://supportkind.org/media/death-by-a-thousand-cuts-the-trump-administrations-systematic-assault-on-the-protection-of-unaccompanied-children/…
It’s hard to know where to even start with this (unless you happen to be a US congressperson, in which case fuck you). But here are a couple of orgs working on behalf of “unaccompanied minors,” which is what these kids are called after BEING TAKEN FROM THEIR PARENTS:
These are asylum seekers. ASYLUM SEEKERS.
They’re taking kids away from people fleeing violence and horrific shit in their own country in the hopes that it will deter other people seeking refuge from coming to this country.
America! Wooo!
Small brain: that Jessie’s Girl song is pretty catchy
Bigger brain: ugh, it’s sooo formulaic tho
Expanding brain: it’s the greatest pop song of all time
Galaxy brain: JESSIE’S GIRL IS A GLORIOUS QUEER ANTHEM ABOUT QUEER WOMEN PERPETUALLY FALLING FOR STRAIGHT LADIES W/BOYFRIENDS
to arrive in Dublin airport & was stood next to these legends. For so many years women have had to quietly board planes, alone, vulnerable and in silence. Well now women are arriving back to #repealth8th and they’re being cheered to the rafters. #hometovote
The #hometovote feed is an affirmation of the best of the human spirit. Irish women & men, from all over the world, journeying home to #RepealTheEighth - ádh mór! Ireland is becoming a more compassionate, modern country! 🇮🇪❤️
I can’t even express how much easier and lower-stress my life would be if there were some sort of badging system indicating people who welcome convos with strangers vs those who experience them as intrusion.
Mutually-comprehensible disagreement is SO HUGE, because it’s essentially a Trojan horse generating cognitive empathy (in spite of everyone’s natural preference to just stay mad instead).
It’s amazing how often saying something like this lowers the emotional temperature, and moves the argument closer to, not consensus but like, mutually-comprehensible, non-villainous disagreement
I love (and sometimes remember to do) this. A good next step is saying to the person you’re acting with: “if I saw evidence of X, that would be a reason to change my mind.”
When you're in a heated argument, stop and ask "What evidence would change your mind?"
If the answer is nothing, there's no point in continuing the debate. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it think.
Thought exercise: Ask yourself what you’d think if a major sports league in another country—say, China or Turkey—made a rule intended to punish those who don’t show sufficient respect to the country’s symbols.
Breaking News: NFL owners agreed to a new national anthem policy: Teams will be fined if players kneel on the field or sidelines, though players will be allowed to stay in the locker room if they choose. https://nyti.ms/2IGIP5E
