Past me is a shortsighted fool and future me is a needy, demanding sort, so thank goodness present me always seems basically pretty chill.

This thread is handy, in a horrifying way (we now need like some kind of visual aid to keep track of the separate ways our government is failing to treat migrant children as basically human)

Keep seeing this and it seems worth noting it conflates two separate travesties. First, HHS has lost track of 1,475 minors of some seven thousand who show up at the border *unaccompanied by family* and were placed with sponsors. nytimes.com/2018/04/26/us/ ... twitter.com/lehimesa/statu

Motion to declare “meaningful new dimensions of badness” as the official tagline of 2018.
Quote Tweet
definitely lost patience with "but things have always been bad" as (1) a rejoinder to people who damn well know it already, (2) a gambit that erases meaningful new dimensions of badness & (3) a fake-wise performance to justify never having done anything then or doing anything now

For me it’s more like a rising feeling of panic, every time. My kids’ preschool has an app where I can see pics of them during the day, so I look at it, feel soothed, and then feel guilty. I don’t actually know what to do with these feelings.

I am reading these first-hand accounts of mothers who had their children taken from them, with no word of where they were going or how to contact them, and I'm thinking about someone doing that to me and my kids and I feel a rage so powerful I think I'm gonna pass out.
Rosa Parks was not protesting the bus. Gandhi was not protesting the food. The colonists were not protesting tea. Players are not protesting the flag or the anthem. They are protesting injustice.

It’s hard to know where to even start with this (unless you happen to be a US congressperson, in which case fuck you). But here are a couple of orgs working on behalf of “unaccompanied minors,” which is what these kids are called after BEING TAKEN FROM THEIR PARENTS:

These are asylum seekers. ASYLUM SEEKERS. They’re taking kids away from people fleeing violence and horrific shit in their own country in the hopes that it will deter other people seeking refuge from coming to this country. America! Wooo!

I can’t even express how much easier and lower-stress my life would be if there were some sort of badging system indicating people who welcome convos with strangers vs those who experience them as intrusion.

I love (and sometimes remember to do) this. A good next step is saying to the person you’re acting with: “if I saw evidence of X, that would be a reason to change my mind.”
Quote Tweet
When you're in a heated argument, stop and ask "What evidence would change your mind?" If the answer is nothing, there's no point in continuing the debate. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it think.

Thought exercise: Ask yourself what you’d think if a major sports league in another country—say, China or Turkey—made a rule intended to punish those who don’t show sufficient respect to the country’s symbols.

Breaking News: NFL owners agreed to a new national anthem policy: Teams will be fined if players kneel on the field or sidelines, though players will be allowed to stay in the locker room if they choose. nyti.ms/2IGIP5E
