EEE is MSFT's nature, over its 30 years. #FOSS is not a fundamental change. The only way it can convince me of being changed is fundamental acts of good faith, like making *everything* FOSS. It won't do it.

That's not a fundamental act of good faith, it's just an extreme position and feels like an excuse to just hate them to me. If you're not interested in helping change them that's fine, but the hordes that screamed at them in the last 15 yrs didn't help - I watched.

Praising them for "changing" them for 20+ years of bad faith is equally foolish, based on what precious little they've actually done to change, though, eh? Doesn't it make you wonder how deep their "love" runs given they've literally open sourced almost nothing?

Yeah, agreed history can't be erased. They have open sourced quite a lot, but I do want to see that they're not just doing the minimum. I think some individuals and divisions do a lot more than the minimum while others do absolutely nothing & here it gets tricky.

Actually, they've open sourced nothing of importance or profitability.

Well, don't they just need to open source stuff that's useful to other people? I don't recall ever judging a project by whether it did lots for the org that made it - rather the people who can use it, learn and make similar things.

They're claiming to "love" Linux and #FOSS, and yet, what, 0.01% of their codebase is now #FOSS? If that? Hmm. If they really love it, why not open it *all*? Seriously. They could announce their intention to do so right now. They won't, because they're full of crap.

I don't know actually. It'd be interesting to find out views from experienced OSS devs who work there how they think they can get the company to join/contribute to the obvious innovation and cost benefits of OSS (that it also receives).

I also notice that MSFT has a concerted campaign against copyleft licenses, the crucial F in #FOSS... that's not very #FOSS friendly, eh. Wonder why they'd be engaging in trying to kill the license that best protects #FOSS against proprietary exploitation...

I've heard of this from a friend! Do you happen to have a pointer to what they've done for reading up? I haven't been able to dredge up details about this copyleft targeting.

Naturally, many people now have a disincentive to draw attention to it, to voice their suspicions... like, say, the Linux Foundation. It'd seem ungrateful, right? See where this is starting to lead?

Hah, I don't think I'd make quite such a jump to LF's motivations. I haven't quite seen this problem defined either. Open-source commercial pragmatism vs Free copyleft's been going on for decades. I mean do they do sth specific besides just publish lots of OSS?

Expedience, particularly related to your core values, is the enemy of principle.... Watch the @BryanLunduke vid I cited way back in this thread.
