This is stupid. Yes she's built a successful following, people wanted to learn ASL because of her. She's not profiting off deaf people, she is profiting off her skills!! & Just because you put a disclaimer that you're not gatekeeping doesn't change the fact that you actually are.

So.. I'm learning several foreign languages (like English). Does it mean, I'm not allowed to use them only because it's not my native language? What kind of bs is this?
Well, now I definitely lost interest in learning ASL. -
Are you trying to profit off those languages, at the expense of its native speakers? Why would anyone want to do that?!
-
There are literally hundreds of YouTubers (for example TadyGavin, an American posting videos in Czech, even tho it's far from perfect) who are making language related videos while learning the language. And they monetize it. So how is she different? Is she stealing you money?
-
They are making merch promoting a specific language and culture not their own to profit off of it?!
-
What's wrong with getting paid for a good promo?
-
You obviously don't get it. Do you have anything better to do than troll?!
-
This is just ridiculous that a girl gets bullied for leaning a language and having fun. Yes, she made some money, but she was working for it. And she didn't steal it from your pocket, so don't blame her... I guess deaf community likes to be a bully and a victim at the same time.
-
Maybe take the time and listen to the people who are involved in that community. They are Deaf/HOH she isn't. When it comes to Russian I would listen to you over someone who isn't native.

The message on the shirt devalues ASL because ASL is HOW I sing, not what I do instead of singing.

this isn’t it. Libbey still made an effort to learn the language. because of her, i met my best friend who is also Deaf. and i would have never met her if it wasn’t for Libbey. how can you say you want people to learn sign language and sh*t on them for how they learn it? toxic
-
Yo we’re all for learning but selling ASL stuff and presenting herself as an expert is not okay, especially when deaf people suffer from underemployment and discrimination
-
she didn’t present herself as an expert. she has said countless times in multiple videos that she is not fluent even though she has been learning for 7-8 years. again, don’t go spreading false information
-
Exactly! I know, as a hearing person myself, that I was learning ALONG side her! I also have a BFFL who’s hard of hearing, and she graduated from Gallaudet University, so I would ask her if anything would need to be more accurately signed. :)
-
You’re not gonna learn much beside basic vocab from her. The only way to become fluent is by interacting w the Deaf community, though formal classes can help. source: was raised oral/ my asl hs class “learned” from music videos and didn’t learn much
-
i learned a lot from Libbey. i got into sign language because of her. if i hadn’t clicked on her video, i would’ve never met my best friend who is Deaf two years ago. now i ask her for help on how to sign properly
-
Getting into sign language is great but again, you’re really only gonna learn vocab from her videos, while you’d learn more semantics from Deaf ones. It’s the same as any other language tbh. For reference, here’s a Deaf MV:https://youtu.be/bISv8rMSPto
-
exactly, you can learn vocabulary from her videos. that’s what got me started into sign language. as i got more into it, i began to learn more ASL watching Bill Vicars. and she has said in her description box that it is a mix of PSE and ASL since she isn’t fully fluent
