I'm really excited to announce that I'm making my debut as a book author, writing a children's non-fiction book about the weather!

A great picture from the hills of NE Wales, showing that settling snow has been focused on higher ground. Had the temperature been 1 to 2C lower, snow would’ve settled down to sea level as well. It shows how a bit of altitude makes a big difference in marginal snow situations!https://twitter.com/derektheweather/status/1355545176610107392 …

An update to the snow warning for tomorrow, which covers parts of Wales, the Midlands into the Cotswolds. Snow most likely over the hills and mountains above 150m, where there could be 3-7cm, with even more higher up. All warnings info

Rain bumping into cold air on Saturday will bring the potential for snow to parts of Wales and the Midlands - especially over the hills and mountains. There's still a lot of uncertainty. All warnings info

Here's today's snow cover (red), as viewed by a NASA satellite from space. This colour has been used to make the snow cover discernible from the clouds. I'll add another video in the thread of a true colour image showing snow in white, for those who find red and green difficult.pic.twitter.com/unFeY3ZyB0

Rain this week won't be as prolonged or amount to as much as last week. Flooded areas that saw 150-200mm in two days last week could see around 30-70mm in five days this week. So, less rain over a longer period of time. Given saturated ground, it still needs watching though...pic.twitter.com/YkiFaQlO5p

#uksnow is about to arrive in London and SE England, giving some places their first snow of the winter. Flakes will be big and fluffy, with the snow settling quite quickly for some. Rain and sleet more likely close to the south coast though.pic.twitter.com/6rw02JOF42Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo -
There's also a snow and ice warning for the N and W of Scotland, where 2-4cm is possible at sea level, with as much as 5-10cm over the hills and mountains. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2021-01-24 …pic.twitter.com/jBExVI7RHH

There's more detail about tomorrow's snow and ice in the latest Met Office warnings. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2021-01-24 …pic.twitter.com/Ki2gF7SeHx

Weather models now give a more consistent picture about tomorrow's snow across England and Wales. 1-3cm possible at sea level, 5-10cm some hills over 100m. However, some coasts will see rain and sleet, and some places will see snow fall but not settle much. Images:

The Met Office weather warnings for snow and ice this weekend capture the uncertainty well, with the detail likely to change even 12 hours before for some places.https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings …

This demonstrates why newspaper articles which pick the weather model showing the greatest amounts of snow around which to craft their hyperbolic, clickbait-driven drivel are fundamentally flawed.https://twitter.com/liamdutton/status/1352595050207850497?s=20 …

Snow forecasting in the UK is tricky and taking anything as a certainty more than three days away is unwise. There are so many factors to consider; - temperature - altitude - urban heat - distance from coast - wind strength - precipitation intensityhttps://www.channel4.com/news/by/liam-dutton/blogs/why-you-shouldnt-believe-a-uk-snow-forecast-more-than-three-days-ahead …

So, which one will be right? I don't think any of them will be exactly right, but I definitely think that the weather model with 17cm is too much. Also, note how some weather models put a covering of snow everywhere, whereas some have it more localised and confined to hills.pic.twitter.com/aOiktfjSZ4

You often hear me mention how tricky it is forecasting
#uksnow. Here's a great example... Four different weather models predicting how much snow there'll be across mid Wales by the end of Sunday. Two of them have just 1cm, one has 6cm, another has 17cm. If it’s snowing where you are and you’re wondering what the yellow, orange or white glow is in the sky, it’s probably the light from streetlights been reflected and bounced around by the snowflakes!
