Both China and the West have created great civilizations, and are realizing people's pursuits in their own way. Both sides should respect and learn from each other, promote common progress, and not be self-conceited, self-centered, or even attempt to change the other one.

Mutual criticism is important. Like freedom of expression. And freedom of movement. And freedom of peaceful assembly. And universal suffrage. And equality before law. And freedom from torture, inhuman treatment or arbitrary detention.

Agree, but we can only “learn from each other” if we are open. Alas, China has banned discussion of so-called Western ideas like free speech and civil society. If these ideas were free to circulate, Chinese may find them appealing and choose that path. We won’t know until we try.
