One thing I've learned is to distinguish those who talk and those who do The most talkative are often the least serious in contributing. Design discussions, debates, no output Those who do the most sometimes talk little, but yet are the people are the most valuable to a project

This means consensus is not 1-person-1-vote. The vote of someone who's proven willing to work is worth 1000x a talker's Also, people can't talk their way out of being labeled a talker. People get upset, but literally nothing they can say changes things: they have to do the work

Someone stepping up and, without help, writing good code for someone else's project is rare & difficult: much more so than working on their own projects. But this is table-stakes for collaboration Individuals who can/will do this are extremely valuable and should be treasured

this seems to favor shitty code to good ideas

No, it favors code over ideas. Nothing says the code is shitty, nor that the ideas are good!

This is true not just for coding. There are ppl very good at both but rare.

Either extreme is likely to lead to some dysfunction. I see a lot of downsides because my org mainly has been mainly a doing culture. Tradeoffs.

Since when has it become okay for us to stereotype and generalise like this? Sadly, this one of the main reasons why people don't feel welcome in our community.
