    Did Ukraine join NATO? No. Did the US place any advanced weaponry in Ukraine? Other than a few small arms and anti-tank missiles, they clearly did not. The west had years to flood Ukraine with high tech weapons and didn’t. Putin’s claims fall apart with just a bit of scrutiny.

    Russian society is fixated with a land border invasion given its history. Israel is fixated on its security given Jewish history. The trauma of 9/11 fuels the US war on terrorism. Every aggressor has a narrative of victimhood it uses to launch war on weaker nations and peoples.

    The imperial mindset assumes every small country leaving its orbit is controlled by rival imperial powers. Chile didn’t really elect Allende.. it was a coup by Soviet spies, Kissinger claimed, just as Russia claims every Ukrainian anti-Russia protest movement is a CIA plot.

    And in that scenario, I’m sure the US, like Putin would make insane justifications, claim to be the victim and the Mexico war was to root out “nazis” or “terrorists” or “racists” or whatever emotionally provocative rhetoric manipulates people the easiest. Still would be wrong.
