What sort of transparency are you looking for? I came into this thread late so apologies if I missed something. Full disclosure: I would also go to bat for the
@devrelcon team any time, any day, and I act as an advisor for@hoopyio.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

The context is that speakers are expected to pay all expenses in order to contribute further to the conference by speaking. It's essentially asking for an investment of time, effort, and money. (more here: https://twitter.com/TejasKumar_/status/1191991386045898753 …) (1/2)

I'm (we're?) interested to see how the money is spent generally in order to help each other understand why the conference cannot support speakers financially. I'd also be interested to look for possible opportunities for help DevRelConf financially if it's a tough season.

Cannot speak for
@hoopyio or@devrelcon, but I know that they do pay speaker travel and expenses for some folks. The past funding criteria has prioritized people from underrepresented groups & speakers who were unemployed or self-employed. (1/2)1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -
(2/2) Vishwa, looks to me from your Tweets like you requested travel funding & your request was rejected. Are you comfortable with asking again? I have coached several speakers on this process before, and if I can be helpful to you I would like to be. These negotiations are hard.

This is what I’m hoping to resolve: there shouldn’t even be negotiations for an unemployed talented speaker from an underrepresented community.

I'm not sure I understand this reply. I think it is because I should have used the word "discussions" instead of "negotiations." Talking about money is just plain hard. I do think it is perfectly reasonable to expect that speakers ask for funding if they require it. (1/2)

(2/2) Maybe this needs to be made part of the CFP process so no one is left looking for funds *after* a paper has been accepted? Vishwa, again, happy to help you with these conversations with DevRelCon and, in fact, any conference if it will help you.

Exactly! I think there wasn't enough information for them to work with since the form for CFP didn't ask for any of it. It can be tricky for both the speakers and the organizers if they have to sort this out after the acceptance of a talk.

This feedback is really good. I know Linux Foundation asks for this info as part of the CFP process. I will suggest it to the program committee as part of our retrospective on this year's event.
