I wrote a blog post for those who think about AI and the future of work today on what we can learn from the first big wave of technological unemployment 200 years ago:

also find it hilarious that Buttigieg is applying strategy to a claw game where the claw strength is often random and (90% of the time) is intentionally too weak to do anything. here’s an example manual for a claw machine - note the strength settings.

Buttigieg: this Warren: Claw machines are designed to be deceptive, the glass is intentionally warped, look at the target from different angles. Sanders: CLAW MACHINES HAVE INSANE PROFIT MARGINS AND EXPLOIT CHILDREN. SAVE YOUR QUARTERS, BUY A BOX OF WHOLESALE TOYS W YOUR FRIENDS.

What a vivid illustration of the rural/urban internet infrastructure divide in America!

Three different sources say a firm called "Shadow" developed the Iowa Dem caucus app. They haven't responded to comment, neither has Iowa Dem Party. The firm was paid by both Nevada & Iowa Democratic Party, disclosures show. Also by Mayor Pete's campaign.

Better yet - screen a double-feature: watch American Factory afterwards as the 30-year-later sequel to Roger and Me.

Nobody believes me when I say this, but... Roger and Me is a masterpiece documentary (yes, it's a Michael Moore movie). If you haven't seen it, and have an interest in FoW/ technological unemployment, watch it.

extrapolating from Stephen King’s work — perhaps surveillance capitalism + disinformation is the scariest thing lurking just beneath the surface of American society

Why aren’t there more Country songs about neural nets? They are all about taking in loss, embracing that loss, making the loss flow through you until you become better

since this is becoming a knowledge dump of an ex-restaurant cook: cookbooks are a bourgeois institution. don’t bother with them. it’s 2020. google it. keep a lab notebook of recipes you try, plus notes on the recipe (tweaks, added ingredients, etc) for each iteration

making your own bread results in incredible end products for literally <$0.50 per loaf, by buying in bulk you can afford to learn by trial and error as much as you need when starting (which is... a lot.)

and (this is way more niche advice): if you bake bread, get your yeast at restaurant supply stores. Biggest difference in price per serving by far: $5 for ~400 of those little grocery store packets (which can be ~$1/packet). It’s also generally quicker to rise.

Also, get kitchen supplies and stuff from restaurant supply stores, super cheap and hard-wearing af:

Life hack: get staples like beans, rice, flour, pasta from restaurant supply stores. It’s insanely cheap in comparison to grocery stores - bought a 50 lb bag of whole wheat flour for $15 (~$0.30/lb) vs 5lb bag of whole wheat flour for ~$5 at Safeway
