    Remember raising this issue at a couple of policy forums pre-vote 2016 - general response was 'that's so interesting, thanks, for raising that....'

    It’s a complex picture and it resists simplistic conclusions. Nonetheless it’s indisputable that the politics of NI has been shaken by the Protocol and Brexit settlement. I made this piece for NN from there in December. So far think it’s being borne out.

    This is the sixth consecutive night of violence in Northern Ireland. The sixth. Talking to those from across the political spectrum in NI tonight there are fears that it may get worse this weekend and beyond into marching season and the summer. V worrying.

    Struck by the bravery of a local pastor who put himself in harms way tonight trying to persuade young lads (who’s heads were narrowly being missed by flying rocks) to pack it in and go home. They all greeted him with a friendly “hi father”, then returned to hurling missiles. – at Shankill/Falls Peace Line

    The Taoiseach responds. This is a delicate for Dublin. They’re hesitant to wade in too deeply, conscious of already being portrayed as the bad guys by unionists but also can’t be seen to do and say nothing.

    I utterly condemn the violent attacks on police, a journalist, and bus driver over recent days in The North. Now is the time for the two Governments and leaders on all sides to work together to defuse tensions and restore calm.

    SDLP politician says "This needs to end now before someone is seriously hurt or worse, killed."

    I've spent this evening trying to talk sense into many young people engaging in violence at Lanark Way and on the Springfield Road. This needs to end now before someone is seriously hurt or worse, killed.

    No further comment from the NI Sec since this tweet late this afternoon

    I am being kept closely appraised by PSNI of developments on recent unrest and I repeat calls for calm. I am appalled that 41 officers have been injured and my thoughts are with them. The people of NI do not support violence or disorder on the streets.

    The Executive will meet tomorrow morning to be briefed on the violence and street disorder which is causing huge distress in local communities at this time. Those involved in violence, criminal damage, manipulation of our young people and attacks on the police must stop.
