Going to bed now for a bit. Long old night. Two years ago, I wrote a book about Labour, Left for Dead, based around the decline of Labour in its traditional areas, like my home seat of Birmingham Northfield. This was its final paragraph. The Tories won Northfield last night.

BREAKING. Italian PM Conte says to a few reporters in London: “I hope the UK will ACCEPT EU level playing field. We should reach deal in the next 11 months because it’s in the interest of both countries”

It’s easy up north to not even be conscious of an election happening in the south, but this one probably matters more than any other...

I put tonight's Irish Times opinion poll into a forecast model and it had SF & FF tied on 39 seats. SF failing to run 2nd candidates in Cork NC, Dublin Central & SC, Laois-Offaly, Sligo-Leitrim, Waterford & Wicklow costing them on avg 4 seats & being biggest party.

  12. If Scottish polls like this sustain, it could be something which steers Boris Johnson to a softer deal with the EU. They are aware of the potential of Scotland to destroy his premiership, which presently seems so unassailable.

  18. Not much to be happy about for Leo Varadkar. His ratings (and the govt’s) are down. Although Martin’s are down too, 46% favour a coalition involving Fianna Fáil – ahead of Fine Gael on 35 per cent and Sinn Féin on 22 per cent.

  19. That refusal to work with SF makes another FF/FG supply and conf agreement (in other direction) likely, possibly even a grand coalition. That, however, would make SF the official opposition. Quite the rise. As recently as 2007 they only had 7% of the vote and 4 seats,

  20. Lots of scepticism still here in Ireland though. Sinn Fein have tended to overperform in polling. Possible they’ve hit their peak. Standing in only 42 seats puts a ceiling on their ambition. FF/FG still won’t work with them, something said again to me today.

  21. 4) huge domestic policy issues in Ireland, especially on housing, inequality and pensions. SF’s radical agenda has appealed to parts of the electorate hungry for change, especially the young- though polling shows they’re appealing to richer voters, often for the first time, too
