I've traveled across Asia and am currently on my fifth year of living and teaching English in South Korea. While it has broadened my perspective immensely, I have not been converted into a delusional self-loathing American. Rather it has helped me appreciate where I come from.

I think you’re right. That’s an important failure mode to avoid. My recommendation for people who want reminder of what a miracle America really is: Read the Federalist papers. Read the notes on the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Read Madison read Hamilton read Washington

Can you believe Jonathan Blow blocked me for this response? I spoke from personal experience (a far more informed XP abroad than his in fact), yet was blocked because my view didn't prop up his own. Lost a lot of respect for him today.

Yikes. New to Twitter and don’t understand the norms here honestly. But what *has* been your perspective? Super curious to hear from a teacher in particular. I think Chinese schools are some of the more dystopian stuff that I’ve seen. Want to write about that in the future.

One of the norms here: there’s so much context collapse, people often use block & mute to avoid bickering with randos. I bet the phrase “delusional self-loathing American” triggered the block; it suggests misunderstanding / hostility toward Americans who criticize the US

Jonathan has 118K followers—he has probably experienced overwhelm on Twitter many times from hostile responses to his posts and developed a habit of making block/mute snap judgments to protect his sanity

Anyway, hello, I’m not a complete rando myself; I found your article through our mutual friend Tyler Alterman and I really appreciate the deep and nuanced perspective
