I’m frankly disappointed that the primary response of the tech industry to being scapegoated for a 400 year backlog of civilizatiional sins in which we’re all complicit has been... to meekly accept it by creating a religion around Waldenponding, hustleporn, and Atonement UX

Sounds pretty consistent with mainstream Western values if you ask me :)

Walden ponding ~= monasteries, hustleporn ~= Protestant ethic, Atonement UX ~= confession. This is a pretty safe playbook

I get that you’re disappointed because you want the tech industry to be more promethean... but they’re too big for that now, in the main. Anyway the real frontierfolk are still plugging away in either obscurity or the cover provided by this repentance theater

As far as I can tell, responding to scapegoating with “we’re being scapegoated!” only makes it worse. So some deep “zeitgeist judo” is the only way out. But the tech industry is good at building tech, not doing cultural innovation on the scale of centuries

But then there’s the tech industry’s anima, the other side of the Californian ideology... what’s a label for it that covers both consciousness hacking and Hollywood? That’s more up to the task.
