When your self esteem depends on comparison, looking down on other people is your best bet for feeling good about yourself.

This begs the question: is there such thing as “absolute esteem”? If not, positive self esteem is inherently implied lack of self esteem for others, to some degree.

Only when you’re competing for esteem in exactly the same domain, which is usually not the case. Below esteem in Maslow’s pyramid is love/belonging. Some of the corruptions of seeking esteem come from trying to have it fill a lack in the layer below, which it cannot do.
