A lot of people think transparency is simply a good thing. Those same people who feel comfortable working at that level of generality tend to think privacy is also a good thing. I guess I don’t know how those two thoughts don’t bump into each other in the hallways of the mind.

They’re two opposing forces that create a dynamic equilibrium of trust. A: “Be more transparent so I can model you better. That will help us cooperate.” B: “I can, but only if I don’t fear you’ll misuse the information. So it would help if you were more transparent too.”
