It could have been inspired by the Japanese practice, I have never heard of charring wood in the context of Scandinavian vernacular building practice. Maybe

It was indeed the Japanese practice Shou Sugi Ban. It’s mentioned in one of the ending shots. Definitely a “hybrid vernacular” build, one that draws from tradition but could only have happened in the modern world. Thanks for sharing the video btw, it was a spiritual experience :)
