The older I get the more I’m convinced that ‘capitalism’ is simply incompatible with life on earth. At some point we need to make a decision: exponential growth, record profits and increasing valuations… or life.
I’m not suggesting a one-to-one mapping. But if your alternative cannot provide people with the standard of living they are accustomed to, or at least provide a fair and humane transition to a new way, it will not be perceived as a way forward.

If/when the current standard people are accustomed to isn’t viable the status quo will move backwards regardless. An alternative will likely never meet the standards we have today, but it doesn’t mean they can’t be better in other ways that matter.

As long as we’re only measuring using one metric we’re unlikely to find an acceptable alternative. Change the metrics and you change the possibilities.
