The older I get the more I’m convinced that ‘capitalism’ is simply incompatible with life on earth. At some point we need to make a decision: exponential growth, record profits and increasing valuations… or life.
I don’t think it’s possible to answer questions like “how much technology X is the right amount for our planet”, weighing its environmental impact against its social value, in a non-authoritarian way, without markets

I think we have to begin employing other weights and measures to define value if we’re to have any hope of changing things.

I’m all ears for plausible alternatives. They’re going to have to be able to do at least as good a job as the current system of managing the incredible complexity of coordination that e.g. reliably restocks grocery stores across the world.
