The older I get the more I’m convinced that ‘capitalism’ is simply incompatible with life on earth. At some point we need to make a decision: exponential growth, record profits and increasing valuations… or life.
But the only means we have to collectively rethink it, to judge its wastefulness, globally (i.e. across differing cultures and gov’ts) and at a granular level is to frame it in terms of price.

I don’t think it’s possible to answer questions like “how much technology X is the right amount for our planet”, weighing its environmental impact against its social value, in a non-authoritarian way, without markets

I think we have to begin employing other weights and measures to define value if we’re to have any hope of changing things.

Therein lies the problem (price). In society we currently place a value on something in terms of monetary value while completely ignoring the cost on the environment and (global) society. Also see the way economists value forests.
