I think we as intellectuals underestimate the broad appeal of “social cognition”—that the average person values being able to see their grandmother’s face from 5000 miles away more than advances in their ability to manipulate abstractions.

The vision of Engelbart et al. is still important and beautiful—but I suspect those who are most drawn to that frontier will always be a minority.
