Yeah, it could be a mental strain & harder to visualize. I think a 2x2 should be like an aphorism, giving the reader a nudge but plenty of space to work out the implications themselves

It's a strain to visualize, but it's often a way to relax on the front of making choices/importance assessments. The reason I like the 2x2 over say 2x2x2s or 3x3s is that it forces you to make choices and identify the most important dimensions.

There's also important affordances to 2d that are missing or complicated to work with in 3d
