‘The grid’ (or ‘cloud’) is the (ideally) public commons which all individuals can contribute to and consume as required.
Unfortunately ‘the cloud’ (and I’d argue ‘the web’ as we know it today) has only served to further centralize our data within privately owned solos. The FT article the other day about a publicly funded BBC style data platform is an interesting alternative.
Yeah, I’ve come to think in terms of a digital equivalent of distributed solar, wind, wave, etc being smaller, individual and economically viable contributions towards a greater whole.
