I must have blinked watching the gif. What value do you use to get the Alpha/4 channel?

It's not in the gif, but same as the others. You set the channel you want to 1 and the others to 0. So for Alpha you set the Alpha of the selector to 1 and all others to 0.

This is cool for changing it at runtime, but I prefer to set the Component Mask node as parameter an choose the channel from the Material Instance. Nice to have another resource at hand. Keep it up!

I suppose the difference between this and a mult is that is flattens it into a single float channel (for use in lerps etc).

the Channel Mask Parameter node does in a user friendly way (a list of channels) in a Material Instance

The channel mask param gives you user friendly check boxes, but that method results in a boolean, on off behavior. The dot prob method allows you to blend or lerp between channel, as well as some other neat tricks. But ease of use is always important!
