Look at the magnificent spiral arms! Two faint (possibly satellite) galaxies can also be seen (top-right & bottom-centre).

Our deep image of the stellar stream in the proximity of NGC1052 DF2, the famous (and controversial) galaxy with little or no dark matter (the small galaxy in the bottom right of the field). The stream seems to not be associated to it. Image by Mark Hanson with a 0.5-m telescope.

Ghosts of dwarf galaxies around nearby spiral galaxies, including a nice distant "NGC 5907 stream" analog (right panels). Images taken from our stellar tidal stream project with the Legacy surveys and composed by (with data provided by & ).

Very interesting talk by Louise Breuval on H_0. Her work uses stable Cepheid companion stars to mitigate uncertainties in Gaia parallax, which can be biased due to their variability. They find H_0 = 69 +/- 2!!

For the same reason, when a dwarf star inflates to become a giant or a supergiant, it’s rotation rate slows down considerably.

A good science journalist doesn't just read the press release. They read the paper. They read other papers that are related. They know the best questions to ask, and know enough to ask what they don't understand. They are familiar with how science works.

(5/6) We find that, in LCDM, tidal and “normal” (dark-matter-dominated) dwarf galaxies populate different regions in the radius vs. mass diagram, in disagreement with observations (see Fig. 12 of our paper).

(4/6) Our study verifies the expectations that two types of dwarf galaxies with different properties must exist in a Lambda-Cold-Dark-Matter (LCDM) universe.

(3/6) We found around 100 such galaxies, and we performed thorough analyses and investigations on their properties concluding that they are strong candidates for being tidal dwarf galaxies.

(2/6) I had the pleasure of contributing to a study led by Moritz Haslbauer (an excellent PhD student in Bonn) for searching for dark-matter-free dwarf galaxies in the Illustris cosmological simulation.
