Another atmospheric river strikes California today. Lucky #13! Deep bow to health care workers dedicated to rescuing patients isolated in rural communities. This story will warm your heart!
THUR at 9 AM PT w/ @lesleywmcclurg:
For our latest installment of Climate Fix @ezraromero, @sfbcdc's Dana Brechwald & @KrisLMay discuss groundwater levels in the Bay Area.
Have you experienced flooding in your home and how did you handle it?

"Patients sit for days, unbathed, not ambulated, using urinals standing in corners in view of everyone... Hands reach out from gurneys as I pass asking for food, water, help to the bathroom, a blanket, or someone to simply talk to and show they care."
It's easy to move on from the poop that flooded Bay Area streets just a few weeks ago, or the thousands of dead fish that washed up all over our shores.

Do you know anyone personally who experienced sewage backing up into their home during the recent rainstorms in the Bay Area? I'd love to talk to them for a follow-up story on our region's aging infrastructure.
“Some of the strengths that many people with autism have is looking at systems that are done because we've done them that way forever and calling it out as BS. People with autism can easily say, ‘This doesn't make sense to me. This isn't my experience.’”
Despite this year's flooding, up until today, last year's northern California precipitation exceeded this year's precipitation. Last year became a drought year, so anything can happen. We can have drought and flood in the same year.
Our new "climate chaos" is offering some hellish whiplash in California. Does anyone have a personal story about what life has been like going from severe drought to atmospheric rivers?
All those colds we didn't get during the pandemic are hitting with a vengeance. Pediatric hospitals across the Bay Area are slammed with kids with #RSV. Now doctors worry about a tripledemic this winter when #influenza, #COVID19 and RSV collide.
The debate over gender affirming care for youth is heating up. Leaders in 21 states are trying to restrict hormones and puberty blockers by criminalizing parents or doctors. Meanwhile California just became a safe haven. How do we ensure kids win out as tensions rise?
California is the first state in the nation to create a sanctuary for transgender youth seeking medical care.
Gov. @GavinNewsom signed a new law in Sep. that ensures transgender kids from elsewhere can safely access hormones or puberty blockers here.

You may have seen images from the Bay area of thousands of dead fish washing ashore. Untreated sewage discharge in the warming waters may have caused a dangerous algal bloom.
"I feel like Kaiser banks on people being burnt out enough to not keep escalating and advocating for themselves. And then those who are privileged enough to do so pay out of pocket." Kaiser nurse.
The data on supervised injection sites is solid. Opening places for people to inject or snort illegals drugs not only saves lives but saves a lot of money. But it's hard to wrap your head around.
California lawmakers are debating opening supervised sites for people to use drugs. How would they work? (via @lesleywmcclurg for @NPR)

The latest #DeepLook takes you underwater to reveal the surprisingly wild sex life of acorn barnacles. I promise you'll never look at these jagged little rocks the same. Also congratulations team to our 150th episode!
#COVID cases have doubled in the past two weeks in California. The Bay Area is the state's hotspot. Yet this surge is different than past upticks. Doctors say throw on a mask in crowded indoor spaces, but other than that just keep on living.
BA.2 wave in the US ?
—The good part is that we're starting from a very low case burden, unlike previous waves
—There are 8 states + Puerto Rico w/ double digit increase % in the past 2 weeks (not including home tests)
—We will have a wave. The only question is how big it'll be
🛰️Using satellite imagery, we'll look at the startling spread of wildfires and what happens before and after a burn and understand its patterns.

The US pandemic: We know what a country-wide surge looks like (wave 5). It's clear now that wave 6 (BA.2), yet still in the works, will not resemble that
For the next few months I'm hosting #DeepLook! These honeypot ants are specially chosen to gorge on nectar and turn into golden hanging balloons to feed their colony. Watch this sweet feast unfold drop by drop in the latest video:
Every time I think the pandemic will relent a new #Variant strikes. Fortunately so far the new 'stealth variant' or BA.2 is not driving an increase in cases in the California. And a future surge is not inevitable.
The war over masks in schools has largely played out among parents. Now it's time to hear from kids as some children ditch face coverings in California for the first time since school returned to in-person last year.
Honestly the details uncovered in John Abramson’s book shocked me. Every health care worker needs to read 'Sickening.’ Big pharma is getting away with murder, literally.
Some may see drug companies as the hero of our current crisis. But the #Pfizer#vaccine is the most profitable drug EVER. John Abramson's new book "Sickening" shines a bright light on the dark underbelly at play in American health care. I'm guest hosting tmrw 9 AM... KQED Forum.
