For all Americans who are going to be suddenly interested in Iran in the coming days, learn a bit of history about what the US did in Iran in 1953. We consider it ancient history, if we remember it at all. But Iranians have never forgotten.

The internet shutdown in Iran will affect students applying to graduate schools abroad. I am writing to my dean and other administrators asking for accommodations for applications should they not make the deadlines. What have you been doing or suggest we do to mitigate?

My sweet mother posted this today. Today, 25 years ago, life as I know it began. Today was the day I was found outside an orphanage in China. After going to med school and learning more about breastfeeding, I'm so thankful for what my birth mother did for me.

We hope that these criteria will serve as the jumping-off point for future studies, including validation studies and treatment trials. Achieving a ‘consensus’ in any field is tough, and this field is more controversial than most. So we have been conservative in our criteria.

JUST PUBLISHED! V proud to present our international consensus on an approach to diagnosis and management of autoimmune psychosis. Nearly 2 years in the making, we hope this will help psychiatrists in recognising this important organic cause of psychosis.

So if a resident physician, working 80 hours/week, is miserable & overwhelmed, and feels it would be helpful to talk to someone, how exactly does he get the time to go to therapy?

First, do no harm. Practicing culturally insensitive medicine is harm. Codifying biases into medical standards is harm. Not using proper pronouns for trans patients is harm. Not recognizing and addressing the maternal mortality gap is harm.

This is a false dichotomy that divides and holds us back. The physicians of the future should be physician scientists AND physician social justice activists. Social justice policy is very often informed by science and rigorous, peer-reviewed research.

In my mind med school is a place to educate physicians. Which means the ability to experiment & use data to improve patient care. A big part of that evidence shows us that social determinants of health play a HUGE role in patient outcomes. Ignoring that is ignoring the science.
