I’ve been e-biking for my commute over the last month, and I love it. Fresh air, lots of exercise but don’t have to show up sweaty, easy to carry cargo around, green...feels like it should be a major part of LA’s future

1/n In our latest at JESP (), Bud Lambert, John Bargh and I made people implicitly like Adolf Hitler as much as some friendly-looking strangers. Moments later, we made them return to implicitly hating Hitler. How? 👇

    (3) This work highlights how top-down framing can shape patterns of reinforcement learning in humans, which might occur by changing one's internal model of the environment or by altering which features of the environment feel rewarding.

    (2) Although participants learned more from generosity (vs rewards) when learning about humans (vs slots), they still liked humans who provided large rewards--consistent with our recent work on the role of instrumental learning in forming social attitudes:

That raised the Q of whether social cognition was involved at all, or if people were simply learning from relative (versus absolute) rewards. By establishing a difference between social/non-social learning, our new work highlights a contribution of social cognition to learning.

    (1) Our prior work showed a dissociation between reward and trait learning in behavior and the brain: But it didn't find a social vs non-social distinction, for reasons we discuss in our new paper.

This change in learning also gave rise to different patterns of evaluation: participants preferred generous humans and rewarding slot machines, relative to their respective counterparts. This finding expands on our prior work in a few ways:

Task framing (social/non-social) sharply changed patterns of learning and evaluation: participants relied more on feedback indicating generosity (relative to monetary reward) when learning about humans but relied more on monetary reward (relative to generosity) for slots.

Participants played a game where they chose social partners who could share money or slot machines that could pay points. Some targets gave large amounts (high reward) and some gave large proportions (indicating high generosity). Only the task framing varied between-subjects.

But we also form abstract trait inferences & use them to estimate the value of partners across settings; someone generous might be expected to treat us kindly across a range of situations. We therefore asked if social contexts alter the dynamics of human reinforcement learning.

Through social interactions, we learn the value of interacting with different partners. This resembles reinforcement learning, wherein we experience rewarding outcomes and learn whether to repeat the same choices.

I’m so happy that this paper with , and Sarah Stoycos is finally out! It’s well-established that social groups may serve a regulatory function, but we argue in this paper that these regulatory processes may carry costs for groups. 1/
