We need to have a discussion about how sexual violence is handled within the justice system. It's important to extend compassion to the accused, but we can't forget the inherent violence of how our justice courts handle rape accusations, forcing victims to resort to other means.

That doesn't even include the part where most of these victims also need medical care for physical wounds from being assaulted.

You will be asked to strip and prodded at by swabs to DNA evidence, more often than not on your genital area. You are then to give a detailed, coherent physical testimony of what happened, for several hours.

You've just been assaulted, and you can't wait more than a day after it happened. You can't shower, you can't brush your hair, and you have to get to a clinic while in that state and ask to have it done and hope the clinic offers those services (not all clinics do).

I've talked with health providers who have done these, and even when the healthcare worker is trained and well intentioned, it is a horrible experience for the victim.

I've seen a lot of articles about how rape accusations ruined lives, but very little about why the act of denouncing sexual violence can in itself be a traumatic experience. Here is a step by step rape kit guide to help even out the discussion. Obviously TW for sexual violence.

Not-smart 16yo teenage me dated a 20yo white man who proudly talked about his "yellow fever" Asian fetish. I used to laugh it off as a silly anecdote, but 10 years later he's on the Dis Son Nom sex abuser list and a guy just like him in Georgia mass murdered 8 women.
