i found that really disturbing, that she seems to care more about seeming good than being good, though i guess it also makes sense from the POV of someone whose entire life has been focused on being looked at and evaluated

I think the doc shows somebody who is genuinely trying to be good, kind, and thoughtful (and perhaps getting better at it everyday) but is still completely limited by her inability to see outside herself.

Seeming good is very important if you want to be actually good but not be taken advantage of. A malicious person can portray you as dishonest in their dealings with third parties and use other people against you. Being perceived as good can reduce the possibility of this working.
