I would not put it quite this way, but let us say that I did not feel "deprived" when Facebook.com went down. They do good engineering work... but nobody will convince me that they are an existential threat.

Whatsapp is a crucial infrastructure in many parts of the worlds. In Israel, for example, you can assume *everyone* will have it, and it is not something that you can easily replace with SMS.
