this would be way more useful measured against futures imo, and across implementations. windows automatically spawns 4 worker threads for every process so the first four tasks should have nearly no overhead

C++ 20 supports coroutines, you'd keep the threads suspended and use coroutines to feed them work from time to time, the activation of a coroutines has expenses in the order of a function call!
