I think the reason why most people think they'd make amazing game designers comes down to two things: 1) It's easy to suggest ways to improve existing games. 2) It's easy to declare those suggestions a success without implementing them and seeing the other problems they cause.

I think there are a couple of ways people are misinterpreting this tweet. 1) Feedback IS valuable, and it’s different to saying ‘devs are idiots, I could do better’ 2) Not trying to discourage anyone, you CAN get good at game design but it takes time and practise like anything.

That last bit is the bit that I don’t think anyone outside of any software related role could really understand. So much more than just changing some numbers.

I remember when I was teaching, if I ever heard someone say 'X game is shit', I'd ask 'what it is about it you think is shit? be specific' and when they told me what was wrong I'd ask 'why do you think they made it that way?' Tried to get them to see things as more complex.

What do you mean my suggestion to "just add co-op" might cause other problems?

I swear the TINIEST of changes can have huge ramifications. First domino to fall, house of cards, butterfly effects - all apt metaphors.

I reckon with a limitless budget and endless time and no technological limitations and a completely hands off publisher and a totally stable toolset and predictable and consistent users installing onto identical systems with perfect internet my game would be pretty good in places

Yeah even the fact people jump to offering solutions w/o first working to understand the problems says a lot. My tepid & tangentially related take, UX is a stronger background for game design than game design.

This! If you’re not questioning the problem, you’re playing a guessing game.

I believe one of the most valuable skills a designer can have is being able to predict the deep ramifications of a design change. Being able to say "X sounds cool, but if we implement it we're going to break Y and Z" can save sooo much wasted effort.

Agreed, but your right to call it a skill. And as a skill, you kinda learn it with experience.
